CoFiA Barbecue at Carmita’s

On Saturday, August 12, CoFiA members are invited to a barbecue at the lovely home of Carmita Fong in Leonia. Carmita has hosted us for many wonderful get-togethers over the years, from celebrations for OSHA graduates to end-of-season barbecues and fund-raising concerts. The August 12 event begins at 7 p.m. with a pot-luck supper followed by conversation, presentations, and musical performances.

We are happy that our long-time friend and consultant Elias Garcia will be with us and help to welcome new members of CoFiA. Elias will bring us up to date on what is happening in the Guatemalan community here and in Guatemala, and present important information on how Guatemalans can work with the consulate to update their passports, DPIs, and other important documents. Welcome, Elias!

Our staff members Angelica Martinez and Saydah Tuanama will tell us about this summer’s Leadership Development classes at the Palisades Park public library. These focus on learning to present workshops on Know Your Rights, as well as on how families can prepare for possible deportation of parents. Both are difficult but important topics and CoFiA stands ready to help anyone who is anxious about what may be happening as immigration policies become even more difficult and perplexing. We are also preparing to provide information on how to prevent or report wage theft–a continuing issue for many people.

Our friends Joselino Chocoj and Francisco Balan will provide musical entertainment–always a big treat at our parties.

And all of us will provide food, food, glorious food. For more information about the party, including directions to Carmita’s and a note telling us what you can bring, send a message to info@communityoffriendsinaction.org or marbwhite36@gmail.com; or call CoFiA at 201-598-2253 (English/Spanish) or 201-561-4192 (Spanish)
